Other highlights of the jewellery section included  £6,000 for an intaglio signet ring, £3,200 for a gold reeded and domed link bracelet, £2,700 for an early-mid 20th century old cut diamond and sapphire oval cluster ring, £2,200 for a sapphire and diamond bangle and £2,100 for an 18ct gold chain necklace.

Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley, Halls Fine Art’s silver and jewellery specialist, said: “Around 95% of the silver and jewellery lots and 60% of the watches were covered by commission bids and bidding was highly competitive.”

The auction was packed with above estimate prices and watches were not to be outdone. A Tudor Oyster Prince Submariner gentleman's stainless steel bracelet watch sold for £4,400, a M. F. A Rolex Marconi gentleman's 14ct gold wristwatch inscribed 'No 60 (Bombing) Squadron R.A.F. Kohat 1926', which was discovered by chance by auctioneer Alexander Clement, when valuing saddles at a house just a couple of miles from Halls headquarters, sold for £1,050.

“You just don’t know when you go into somebody’s home what you might potentially be looking at,” said Alexander. “This watch was bought in Calcutta in 1926 by an RAF pilot who was serving in India and was handed down through the family. I was delighted with the price it achieved.”

Other leading prices in the section were  £1,900 for an 18ct gold open face pocket watch, £1,800 for a Rolex gentleman's 18ct gold Cellini wristwatch, £1,700 for a Rolex Oysterdate gentleman's stainless steel bracelet watch, £1,500 each for a Garrard lady's diamond set white metal bracelet watch and an Omega Constellation gentleman's 18ct gold wristwatch.

The silver section also performed strongly, as a set of 1936-’7 silver flatware sold for £2,250, a Victorian four piece silver tea service made £1,150 and a pair of George III silver sauce tureens sold for £1,100.

Six lots of 9ct gold agricultural medallions, which came from a late Wolverhampton collector, sold for £1,250 each. Together with other lots, the consignment totalled £13,000.

“The obvious message from our successful auction is everybody wants gold,” said Mr Clement. “When the world is facing uncertainty, we always find that precious metals and more collectable items increase in value. Gold, in particular, is a safe haven for investors.”
