A signed limited edition of the classic Tales of the Riverbank
30/01/2021
Lot 27 is a superb deluxe signed limited edition of Kenneth Grahame’s classic tale of the riverbank, The Wind in the Willows.
Although the book was first published in 1908, the first illustrated edition was not published until 1931. Ernest H Shepard, already well-known for his illustrations for A A Milne’s Winnie-The-Pooh books, was chosen to draw the pictures. His wonderful images are now inextricably linked with Grahame’s storyline.
For this edition Shepard redrew his illustrations and also coloured them. Only 250 copies were printed, each finely bound in green morocco with gilt edges, and each signed and numbered by Shepard in 1971. Shepard died five years later in 1976, aged 96. The estimate is £300-500.
Coloured Illustrations by E H Shepard. 1st edn, 1971.
One of 250 copies signed by Ernest H Shepard. Full green crushed morocco gilt, all edges gilt, in slip case.
