The Spring Auction

A few words from Head of Halls Fine Art Gerry Berwyn-Jones

Easter is just around the corner and as the days get longer and, hopefully, brighter why not visit us in person, especially given that for the first time in two years there are no rules or restrictions concerning viewing, or bidding in person and there is a super café on site, offering lots of tempting, home-made cakes and snacks. At the saleroom you will enjoy ‘window shopping’ and might just find that perfect present, whilst at the same time having some fun in bidding for it.

They say variety is the spice of life and this is very much the case for Halls’ first fine sale of 2022. There is a great selection to choose from in every category and whether a collector, a furnisher, or someone seeking a gift there is something for all pockets. At the more affordable end there is an array of novelty jewellery, including a diamond butterfly and arrow brooch (£150-200) and a horseshoe pearl variant (£120-180), lots 46 and 95. There are watches, 18th and 19th century ceramics (including a good collection of parian) and works of art and silver on offer within the same price bracket. For those with deeper pockets, hunting for an anniversary, birthday or perhaps an Easter present there is a rare blue diamond ring with an estimate of £18,000-20,000 and a Rolex chronometer watch on offer for £4,000-6,000.

Country/hunting related silver lots range from an impressive fox’s mask stirrup cup (£2,000-3,000) and two silver pheasant table ornaments (£250-350), to a set of 4 menu card holders in the form of a hare and greyhounds (£200-300) and a rare Edwardian sugar castor, in the form of an owl (£4,000-6,000).

For collectors of sculpture there is a rare opportunity to acquire work from the seemingly overlooked but highly regarded, Thomas Kendall, a leading light of the Warwick School of carving, the highlight being the 130cm high figure of semi-clad maiden, expected to exceed its £3,000-5,000 guide. Numismatists will have a private collection of coins to pore over, which includes a rare palladium set of Tongan coronation coins (£5,000-7,000). Equally, for bibliophiles there is a James I bible and maiolica collectors a 15th century style jug (estimates £10,000-15,000 and £5,000-7,000 respectively).

If it is impressive, imposing examples that are sought, look no further than the onyx and champleve longcase clock (£6,000-8,000), or the specimen marble table (£2,000-3,000).

There is something for most tastes and budgets and if there isn’t in this sale, we have many other sales in the pipeline
