Lots with links to an impressive Shropshire property that featured in the film ‘Atonement’ sold in Halls Fine Art Auction in June.

Stokesay Court was used as one of the principal locations for the film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s best selling novel, Atonement, which stars Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Vanessa Redgrave, who spent nearly six weeks shooting key scenes in and around Stokesay in the summer of 2006.

A mid-19th century mahogany campaign box, which belonged to Lieutenant-General Sir William Russell (1822-‘92) and was purchased by the vendor in a sale at Stokesay Court, Ludlow in October 1994, and sold in the June Fine furniture, European Ceramics and Decorative Arts Auction at £550

Sir William served with distinction in the Crimean War and in the suppression of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 before becoming a Liberal MP for Dover from 1857-’59 and for Norwich from 1860-‘74. His connection with Stokesay Court came through his daughter, Margaret, who married Herbert Derby-Allcroft, owner of the property, in 1900.

Senior Auctioneer and Valuer Andrew Beeston confirmed “We had in excess of 300 people bidding on line and around a third of the lots sold to bidders not in the saleroom. Quality and quirky lots sold well and demand is not always dictated by age. It’s based on selling things that appeal to buyers and will fit into their home.”
The next Fine Art event features in the Fine Furniture, European Ceramics and Works of Art Auction on the 8th October for which entries are invited until the 8th September.
