Two collections of motoring books and magazines sold for more than £4,000 at Halls last week.
The collections went under the hammer in a 205-lot book sale as part of an interiors auction at our Battlefield salerooms on July 26.
One of the collections, from a Shropshire vendor, included Jaguar, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, and Mercedes sports and racing cars and Vincent and Matchless motorcycles.
The second collection was consigned by a Shrewsbury vendor who inherited early motoring magazines from his uncle and added to them over the last 50 years.
There were bound volumes of The Autocar from 1926 and bound volumes of The Motor from the early 1920s. In addition, the collection included several individual copies of Show Reports of The Autocar from the 1920s and ‘30s and motorcycling magazines from the same period, many with striking Art Deco covers.
The top selling lots were £320 for a box containing The Motor Show Reports and others issued from the 1920s and ‘30s and £200 for a collection of The Autocar Show Reports and Buyers’ Guides.
‘The Immortal 2.9 Alfa Romeo 8C,’ 1986 by Simon Moore sold for £180, a box containing ‘Aston Martin and Lagonda’ 1979 by Chris Harvey with other Aston Martin books sold for £170 and a spare parts list for the legendary Mercedes Benz Type 300SL (Gull Wing) Edition C circa 1956 made £120.
“The sale was an opportunity to buy scarce and sought-after motoring books and magazines,” said Halls’ books specialist Christopher Moore. “The Show Reports of The Autocar, The Motor and The Motor Cycle from the 1920s and 30s were particularly popular.
“My personal favourite was the spare parts list for the legendary Gull-Wing Mercedes-Benz that sold for £120. These cars sell for more than £1 million.”
