Popular contemporary artist Jonathan Armigel Wade has consigned another oil painting to Halls Fine Art where he has a good following.
The painting entitled ‘Tea Break’, which depicts two figures taking a break from their labours with a dog by their side and a sunlit coastline beyond, will go under the hammer in Halls’ fine Paintings, Silver and Jewellery auction on Wednesday 18th March, where it’s expected to fetch up to £1500.
“The artist tells me this wonderfully contrived scene is the West Coast of Scotland in the Highlands,” said Allan Darwell, head of Halls’ paintings department. “This picture has an amusing twist because, although the title is ‘Tea Break’, there is a bottle of whiskey placed beside the chair where one of the figures is seated, hence the artist informing me that it is “his take” on the Western Highlands.
“The work is really well painted, in excellent condition and contained in the usual hand-made frame that Jonathan has specially made for his pictures.
“Halls is very privileged indeed to be regularly given the opportunity to represent this very popular painter. His subjects, over the many years I have known him, have ranged from pure landscapes as well as hunting and sporting scenes, through to figurative subjects, such as the one that I very much regret not purchasing many years ago of figures playing dominoes in a pub interior in front of an open fire with a dog curled up asleep nearby.”
Wade, who was born in 1960, has a very unusual and distinctive painting style, which he describes as “curvispective”, with strong colours and a challenging sense of movement and vibrancy.
Last November, one of his works, entitled ‘After the shooting lunch’, tripled its pre-sale estimate to sell for £3,000 at Halls. Another painting, entitled ‘Saturday’, which depicted huntsmen and hounds crossing hilly landscape, sold for £1,050 at the company’s Christmas collective auction.
