Three oil paintings of scenes related to Shrewsbury School by its former director of art, John Alford, have been consigned by a Devon art collector to the ‘Made in Shropshire’ section of fine art auctioneers Halls’ auction of fine furniture, European ceramics and works on October 8.
Valued at between £200 and £400 each, the paintings depict rowers on the River Severn with Shrewsbury School nearby, another river scene with figures near a boat house and figures in a commentary box watching a cricket match at the school.
Alford, a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the New English Art Club retired from the school in 1989 and his paintings focus mostly on the Shropshire countryside.
‘I enjoy painting a wide variety of subjects, but I shall always be grateful that I found Shropshire when I was about 30,’ he said. ‘Its varied landscape has remained a favourite subject that never fails to excite a whole range of emotions and my work is nothing more than a celebration of the pleasure of being out there.’
Caroline Dennard from Halls said: ‘We are delighted to be offering three oil paintings by John Alford in our October 8 auction and anticipate great interest from local art collectors because the subjects relate to Shrewsbury School.
‘The ‘Made in Shropshire’ theme has captured the imagination of people living within and outside the county and we’re hoping for an excellent attendance at the auction.’
