Halls to hold books valuation event at Halls Head Office in Shrewsbury.
Shropshire fine art auction house Halls is providing a chance for owners to have books expertly assessed and valued by a specialist next month.

Chris Moore will hold a books valuation day at Halls’ headquarters and salerooms at Battlefield, Shrewsbury on Friday 19th June from 10am to 2pm. The company is aiming to develop dedicated book auctions and is keen to see rare and unusual examples as well as private libraries.

Examples of books previously sold by Halls include a bible dated 1589, imprinted by deputies of Christopher Barker, printer to the Queen, which sold for £5,600 and a first edition of The Book of Common Prayer, printed in 1662, which sold for £4,000.

The ‘Sermons of Master John Calvin Upon The Book of Job, imprinted by Lucas Harrison and George Byshop, 1574, with the arms of Elizabeth I to both boards, sold for £2,600, ‘The Book of Common Prayer’ by Thomas Baskett, 1754, including the arms in gilt of King George II, realised £1,350, while a 1614, copy of the 1611 King James Bible, printed at London by Robert Barker, made £1,050.

All these books came from the library of the late Edward V. Phillips, a retired corn merchant who lived near Knighton on the Welsh border.
