A collection of nine first edition fairy books by Scottish author Andrew Lang sold for £850 at Halls Fine Art Book Auction on Wednesday 9th July 2014.
Inspired by the wild and beautiful Scottish borders landscape of his childhood, Lang developed a fascination with local folklore and history. Lang’s most famous books are ‘The Rainbow Fairy Books’, inspired by myths and folklore, an interest which developed as he and his wife, Leonore, collected local legend whilst travelling in France and Italy.
During the late 19th century, Lang challenged claims by some educationalists that magical stories were harmful to children by writing his first coloured fairy book, ‘The Blue Fairy Book’ published 1889. The beautiful illustrations and magical tales captivated the minds of children and adults alike and was followed by the ‘The Red Fairy Book’ published in 1890.
Aaron Dean, the Books Specialist at Halls Fine Art commented that “It was an absolute pleasure to catalogue this auction, which covered such a cross section of age, subjects and interest…I was delighted with the interest generated, the auction attracted consignments from collectors from as far away as Lincolnshire and Lancashire.”
The next Book event features in the Interiors & Books Auction on the 15th of October for which entries are invited until the 22nd of September
