Choosing a favourite lot in our Spring Fine Art auction is really hard given the genuinely terrific range of lovely items.  One object I would definitely give house room to is lot 305, a beautiful Chinese yellow enamel dish from the Gunagxu period (1875-1908).  The colour is really vibrant but the decoration is fantastic, delicately incised, both inside and out, with dragons chasing flaming pearls.  You really have to look at it closely as it’s quite subtle but all the better for it.  When you turn it over, you are rewarded with a beautifully written six-character reign mark.  This dish is definitely one for my fantasy Chinese porcelain collection.

My favourite lot in the auction has to be these stunning Victorian drop earrings. They are so simple in their design and the fact that you could mistake them for a piece of jewellery made only yesterday is a testament to the their timeless style. They are understated in their adornment meaning they wouldn’t look out of place worn at the supermarket, but would also complement an evening dress beautifully- truly pieces for any occasion!

I love this painting because it depicts a group of friends frolicking and enjoying each other’s company spread out beneath a tree next to a stream. You can see how relaxed everyone is, sat chatting and relaxing, having thrown their kit down on the grass. There’s a gentleman tapping a drum, another sketching the landscape with his companion giving him tips and another completely spread out smoking a pipe on the floor. We are all looking forward with hope for the summer that we might be reunited with friends and family and hopefully planning picnics and gatherings again after a difficult year. I have fondly been looking at this painting over the last months and imagining the day when we can do these things again.

My favourite lot of the sale is Lot 235 because not only are they a matching pair, but they have lovely ornate Damascus barrels and delightfully rich figuring to the walnut grips. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many private citizens carried weaponry as a form of self-defence and it is not difficult to imagine such a pair of pistols being carried by a traveller of considerable means – and perhaps even being angrily waved at a so-called ‘Gentleman of the Road’ highway robber, who would otherwise seek to relieve them of their personal belongings.
