Purrfect £7,000 for clowder of cats

A huge collection of ceramic, glass, metal and wooden cats, which filled a bedroom in the late owner’s Shropshire home, has sold for more than £7,000 at our Interiors Auction.

The collection, which extended to around 500 cats of all shapes and sizes, was discovered by experts from fine art auctioneers Halls following a probate valuation of the estate of an elderly woman.

The most valuable of the lots on offer in Halls’ interiors auction was a pair of Briglin Pottery cats that sold for £120.

“The cats filled a first floor bedroom in the house,” said Caroline Dennard, our European ceramics specialist. “Some were in glass display cabinets while the rest were on the floor. The late collector obviously had a great fondness for cats.”

The most valuable pieces from the collection – two restored mid-19th century Meissen cats valued at up to £300 – are due to be sold in Halls’ collectable ceramics auction on Wednesday 29 October.
