Judge a book by its cover?

30/08/2017     Books

Have you ever looked through your inherited book collection to see if there may be a first edition in pristine condition? Condition is important but it’s not everything when it comes to valuing books. Halls Fine Art is providing a chance for readers to have books, autographs and manuscripts expertly assessed and valued by its specialist Chris Moore.

Chris will hold a books valuation day at Halls’ headquarters and salerooms at Battlefield, Shrewsbury on Monday 18th September 10am – 5pm. The company is keen to see rare and early examples as well as private collections.

In 2014 a collection of nine first edition fairy books by Scottish author Andrew Lang sold for £850 at Halls Book Auction in July of that year. Inspired by the wild and beautiful Scottish borders landscape of his childhood, Lang developed a fascination with local folklore and history. Lang’s most famous books are ‘The Rainbow Fairy Books’, inspired by myths and folklore, an interest which developed as he and his wife, Leonore, collected local legend whilst travelling in France and Italy. During the late 19th century, Lang challenged claims by some educationalists that magical stories were harmful to children by writing his first coloured fairy book, ‘The Blue Fairy Book’ published 1889. The beautiful illustrations and magical tales captivated the minds of children and adults alike and was followed by the ‘The Red Fairy Book’ published in 1890.

It doesn’t matter if you are concerned about wasting Chris’s valuable time – Remember there have been occasions when we have found valuable items in someones skip!!!
