Less than a year after becoming a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA), Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley, 28, who heads the silver and jewellery department at Halls in Shrewsbury, has added a distinction in the Diamond Grading Diploma to her list of honours.

It has been a very successful year for Maryanne, who lives in Wellington, as she received the Doug Morgan Trophy last November for achieving the highest mark in the Gemmology Diploma examinations in the Midlands in 2014.

She achieved score of 90 per cent in her Diamond Grading Diploma examination, which was followed by a five day practical test.

“For the past year, I have been studying the theory, history and grading of diamond materials, which culminated in an examination and an intensive, five day practical test in Birmingham,” said Maryanne.

“I am thrilled and relieved that three years of hard work has been rewarded with these qualifications and a distinction. These internationally recognised qualifications are essential for people working in the jewellery industry and give Halls’ clients the assurance that they are dealing with a professional.

“My ambition is to develop and grow the jewellery department at Halls, which we are well placed to do with the great depth of knowledge and experience that we possess as a team.”

Attending Birmingham City University on day release, Maryanne managed to fit her studies around work in the busy fine art team, which she joined more than five years ago following a successful work experience placement.

A history of art and architecture graduate of the University of Reading, she thanked Derek Ainsworth, Halls’ watches, medals, coins and jewellery specialist, for his advice and for sharing his knowledge of the industry amassed over more than 50 years.

Notable discoveries during her time at Halls have included an amber bead necklace that sold for £22,000 and a diamond pendant that made £18,000. She is now accepting other high value pieces for the company’s next fine jewellery and silver auction on November 25.

Jeremy Lamond, Halls’ fine art director, said: “Maryanne is part of an extremely talented team at Halls Fine Art and we firmly believe in supporting them to further their careers with professional qualifications and practical experience,” he said
