RAF Flight Authorisation Logbook - Enemy Aircraft Servicing and Storage Unit (EASSU)

Royal Air Force. An RAF Flight Authorisation Log Book for the Enemy Aircraft Servicing and Storage Unit (EASSU) from October 1945 to July 1946.
An interesting original archive of what happened to many of the captured German enemy aircraft after the Second World War, containing numerous entries and details of Action Before Flight and Action After Flight alongside the date, aircraft type (such as Junkers and Siebel), the captain, names and ranks of the crew, authorised duty, the flight times including landing and take-off, together with a column for the initials of the authorising officers (usually Unit or Flight Commanders) and the aircraft captains.

Notes: Following the end of the Second World War, several enemy aircraft were taken on charge by the RAF. With the return of the American-built transports supplied under Lend-Lease, aircraft such as Ju 52/3ms, would be offered to British airlines for use until indigenous British transport aeroplanes could be delivered. An RAF unit, the Enemy Aircraft Servicing and Storage Unit was formed on 27th September 1945 at Hamburg Airport to handle former Luftwaffe aircraft. Despite this, very few of the Junkers were actually issued to RAF units and several were instead scrapped, while others were disposed to foreign governments. Of those that did arrive in Britain, many were sold to Shorts for refurbishment as civilian airlines and a few were assigned to RAE Transport Flight at Farnborough before being withdrawn from use in October 1946. The remaining aircraft were stored at RAF Brise Norton and eventually sold to a scrap dealer in 1948. Notable members of the EASSU unit include the WW2 Squadron Commander Marian Chelmecki, who was one of the first Polish airmen to arrive for service in Britain.
