On 8th December 1900, British Maj-General R.A.P. Clements concentrated his troops in a position isolated from other British troops at a farm in the South African Republic (Krugersdorp district; Gauteng). This camp was situated under the steep face of the Magaliesberg with poor defensive arrangements. Early on the morning of the 13th of December, Boer forces under Asst Cmdt-Gen J.H. de la Rey and Asst Cmd-Gen C.F. Beyers attacked and overwhelmed the piquet line and entered the camp, which was quickly overwhelmed by Beyer's commandos who entered from a mountain ravine. British losses were 30 killed and 60 wounded (of whom 14 died later) and 315 taken prisoner.
