Footnote:

Charles Haslewood Shannon (1863-1937) was a British painter from Lincolnshire and trained at the City and Guilds of London Art School. He built up a reputation as a portrait painter and known for his classical style, Shannon was heavily influenced by this lifelong partner Charles Ricketts. His earlier work is characterised by low, heavy tones, later moving towards more clear, transparant colours in his painting. In 1928 his artistic career was cut short when an accident left him severely disabled and unable to work until his death.
