Letters from Colonel William Fellowes Collins DSO (Royal Scots Greys) to his wife Lady Evelyn

A collection of twenty-two letters from Colonel William Fellowes Collins DSO (2nd Dragoons, Royal Scots Greys) written to his wife Lady Evelyn Anne Innes-Ker.

Collins was a serving officer at Tidworth alongside Prince Arthur (third son of Queen Victoria). His letters, on Tidworth Barracks paper and in original envelopes with personal seals, date from the period leading up to and after his marriage on to Lady Innes-Ker and show much affection shared between the two lovers. They are peppered with reports on Prince Arthur activities throughout; the Prince was close to Collins and gave him a cigarette case. The letters also carry considerable commentary about his day to day existence and some of the other officers.

Further included is a letter from 1916 written from Bécourt thanking the Colonel for his visit and stating "They will tell you that in this little corner of our country, we sincerely love the friendly nation that you represent and that we base on our united forces the hope of soon seeing our common enemy driven back from our soil."

The remainder of the lot comprises telegraphs, various newspaper cuttings regarding Collins' marriage and engagement together with information about setting up a stud farm, a marriage certificate and other papers together with a letter regarding the appeal for funds in order to aid the children and wives of the Regiment who would be left in a state of extreme poverty due to the war.
