(1) ALS. Tor Villa, Campden Hill, April 27th 1866. Apologising for his delay in accepting a dinner invitation. He ends 'I am not slow in making arrangements when there is no painting to be done.' Two sides.

(2) ALS. Draycott Lodge, Fulham, March 2nd 1896. 'When you see the strayed sheep next you will see that and a foremost sheep has the sun shining thro' his ears and making them so rosy...I did also get the rising sun in the May morning picture showing thro' the ears of the music master...Have you seen William Rossetti's book? It is, with all its studiousness of manner, a most dense revelation...his brother I think would on the whole have wished that he had said nothing whatever.'

Four sides. With the original envelope addressed to His Honour Judge Lushington Q.C. Envelope torn.

(3) Letter signed. 18 Melbury Road, Kensington, 10th November 1904. Offering condolences on the death of Vernon's brother. 'The fact that I cannot now read the papers with my own eyes makes me often miss news...or I should have claimed the right to say a sympathetic word about the death of your brother Edward...We are all rejoiced here at the arrival of Hilary from Burma carrying his promotion with him.' Four sides.

Cataloguer's note: Holman Hunt was a family friend. He painted a fine portrait of Vernon's father, the judge and MP Stephen Lushington.
