Lot 57

A Caughley armorial muffin dish, circa 1790, painted with the family coat of arms of the Braithwaite family, of Yorkshire and Westmorland, contained within concentric blue lines, to the edge is a Fitzhugh type border with a double Nankin border beneath, unmarked, 19cm diameter See The 1976 Caughley Exhibition catalogue, illustrates this plate with the suggestion that this was made as a replacement for a Qianlong export porcelain service specially commissioned by the family, the original pieces of which are on display in the V&A museum. They think it would have been commissioned by Major-General Sir John Braithwaite, who was Commander in Chief of the coast of Coromandel in India. See also CBE Catalogue, plate 667 on page 62, where this dish is again illustrated.
