A Caughley porcelain artichoke ice cup and cover transfer-printed in the Fisherman or Pleasure Boat pattern, circa 1780-90, unmarked, 9cm high Literature: See CP, page 7, no.71 for a similar ice cup described, where the author notes, 'These pieces are more usually described as Artichoke cups, but the Chamberlain accounts for 9th October, 1979, record the purchase of 6 ice-cups and covers, Artichoke pattern, at 1/6, which would seem to suggest that the use of 'Artichoke' in the context of these accounts refers to the shape of these small vessels rather than the usage.
