Hashim Mruta Bushier (Tanzanian 1942-1998) Zebra and birds perched in tree, Tingatinga school, acrylic on board, signed lower left
60.6cm x 61.9cm

Note on the artist: Hashim Mruta had retired from the force as a policeman when Edward Saidi Tingatinga (1932-72), founder of the Tingatinga art school, started painting at the Morogoro Stores. Since Tingatinga already had five students and refused to take any more, Mruta was only allowed to watch the others painting and had to practice on his own at home. After Tingatinga's death, Mruta went on to become one of the founding members of the Tingatinga partnership and later a member of the Tingatinga Arts Cooperative Society (TACS) where he stayed until is death.

Provenance: private collection, the vendor lived and worked in Tanzania in the early 1980's, and acquired the items between 1980 -1984. The art was either commissioned or purchased in Dar es Salaam from various artists in the Tinga Tinga collective. Today many of those artists they knew, proteges of Edward Tingatinga have passed away.

Sold for £140
