A very rare Caughley porcelain ecuelle and cover, circa 1776-85

A very rare Caughley porcelain 'Gooseberry / Fruit Sprays' ecuelle and cover, circa 1776-1785, the round broth bowl applied with two shell-shaped handles and a flower finial, the cover with an opening for a spoon, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with scattered sprigs, a spray including a gooseberry repeated on both sides of the bowl and the cover, the cover with a printed lambrequin border, printed C mark, 12.3cm diam of cover, 16.4cm wide across handles, (chips to cover) (2)

Provenance: Previously sold at Bonhams, 9th September 2009.

Condition Report

Cover - Overside rim chip and several breakages to the tips of the petals on the flower knop, one further chip to the edge of one side of the spoon inlet


Base - undamaged, but with a firing crack through one leaf below the handle.
