Label verso for J Davey and Sons, Liverpool

David Cox was an important figure in the 'Golden Age of English Watercolour' and one of the most reknowned artists from the Birmingham School of Landscape Artists. He is best known for his watercolours of the British countryside and coast, characterised by brooding, atmospheric skies hovering over small human figures travelling or working the land. Cox's series of paintings in watercolour and oil showing travellers crossing the treacherous sands between Lancashire and Cumbria are among his most celebrated pieces.

Sold for £1,400

Condition Report

The paint is in good condition, the colours well preserved with minimal fading and no obvious signs of deterioration. The paper appears to be in good condition with no visible rips, tears or creases. The painting is a work on paper with mount and framed under glazing, some ageing present to the mount.

The back of the painting is sealed and therefore it has not been examined outside of the frame. I cannot say for certain that it is not laid down. It is unsigned, with the title and attribution to David Cox on a label for Davey and Sons, Liverpool on the reverse. It has come from a private collection and in the family for at least two generations, fresh to the auction market.

Bidding indicates acceptance of the condition of the lot.  All lots are sold subject to general wear and tear commensurate with age and handling over time and only obvious faults will be mentioned after a visual inspection. If you have particular specialist questions on any lot, please state these before bidding since we cannot and will not provide a forensic examination of any lot but only a general condition report as a guide only. All condition reports given by Halls Holdings Ltd's representatives or agents are statements of opinion and not fact. If you require any further information about any lots in this auction or about bidding please do not hesitate to contact us again.
