Konstantin Kapidgli was a Greek-Ottoman artist comissioned by Sultan Selim III to draw portrait engravings of Ottoman Sultans, however following Selim III's deposition in 1807 the commission was cancelled, to be later resumed by John Young in 1815 during the reign of Mahmud II. Selim III was the 28th Sultan of the Ottoman empire, known as a patron of the arts and pro-reform. He was deposed in a military coup by the Janissaries and put to death in 1808

Condition Report

The paint surface appears to be in good stable condition, there is some fine craquelure present, minor losses, but no obvious evidence for deterioration. There is a small abrasion to the sitter's left arm and a small scratch to his left ear. There are some minor surface level accretions present. The frame is in solid condition with some chips to the edges including the top left corner and cracking in the surface where the hook has been driven into the frame for hanging.
