Carl Locher (Danish 1851-1915), Evening in the North Sea, HMS London and Other Vessels, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1875 bottom left, framed. Measurements 66.5 x 116 cm, frame 98 x 148 cm

Carl Locher was an important Danish realist marine painter and etcher. He was introduced to the craft by his father who painted ship portraits for a living, which Locher continued after his father's death and subsequently undertook a number of voyages with the Danish Royal Navy. He lived much of his life in Skagen where he devoted himself to his painting, and later to etching, becoming most famous for his naval and seascape compositions.

Condition Report

The painting is an oil on canvas which is framed without glazing. The canvas has good tension and there are no obvious signs of rips, tears or holes. The paint surface has craquelure throughout but there does not appear to be paint loss, there are surface level accretions and some dirt. The frame appears to be in good condition with solid joints, there are surface level cracks to the gilt and signs of general wear and tear.

Bidding indicates acceptance of the condition of the lot.  All lots are sold subject to general wear and tear commensurate with age and handling over time and only obvious faults will be mentioned after a visual inspection.
