  Lot 289

A William IV specimen marble and mahogany centre table

A William IV specimen marble and mahogany centre table, the circular top with a radiating, segmented design of various marbles, including verdo antico and rouge royale type marbles set into a white marble ground, above a beaded panelled frieze with a gadrooned edge, the base of the flared cylindrical support carved with acanthus leaves, raised on a triform platform, carved with gadrooning and raised on 'S' scroll feet with brass castors, some damage, 60cm diameter (marble alone 57cm diameter) x 71cm high

Provenance:

The vendor bought this table for £45 at a Worcestershire farm auction in the late 1960s. The original vendor approached the buyer (Halls' vendor) after the sale expressing their delight at the hammer price, as it had cost the lady concerned three and six (three shillings and sixpence) at a market in the 1930s.

Sold for £4,800

Condition Report

Original marble top with hairline cracks and small chips on outside edges. Thumbnail chip on the underside, located where there are some hairline cracks extending into the top.

Base - gadrooned edge of top with 15cm section re-stuck and small loss at the right side of this section. Fading, particularly one side and water stained. Chips, dents and scratches consistent with age and use.

Overall - a really nice specimen marble top table and original. Most that appear on the auction market have associated bases, or are copies.
