John Michael Groves (1937-2019) Sea Battle between USS Constitution and HMS Guerriere, signed and dated '04 lower right, pastel, 54 x 75 cm, frame 63 x 83 cm

Groves represents a naval battle which occurred on the 19th August 1812 during the British-American War of 1812. HMS Guerriere, captained by James Dacres, was on route to Halifax, Nova Scotia for a refit when it was engaged by USS Constitution, captained by Isaac Hull roughly 400 miles South East of Halifax. HMS Guerriere was outgunned by the American ship and suffered mortal damage. Hull and his crew boarded Guerriere, captured the remaining crew and set fire the ship.
