CRIMEAN WAR. STANLEY, St John, autograph letter signed, dated 12th December 1854 'Camp before Sebastopol'. Stanley was assistant surgeon to the 17th Lancers and was present at the charge of the Light Brigade. 'We have almost ceased to fire upon Sebastopol, all the cannons in position are all worn out, and the roads have been impassible...Everybody is beginning to grumble about the mismanagement of things at Head quarters. A colonel went to Lord Raglan the other day and complained that his men had had no rations for 3 days, he called his secretary and asked if this was the case, which being found to be correct, said it was very sad and there ended his interview...If M H sends me any boots they must be immensely large, in order to put 2 pairs of socks on and to be able to sleep in them'. 3 sides with original envelope and stamps
