Provenance: Sold September 1909 at Galerie Heinemann, Munich, thence by descent in private German collection, purchased at Neumeister Auction Rooms in Munich in 2020, consigned from a private local deceased estate.

Condition Report

The painting is an oil on canvas, framed without glazing. The frame has some general wear and tear including minor surface losses, joints appear solid. The canvas has good tension and does not have any obvious tears, holes or punctures. There are some old repairs to the canvas: a repair to the man's face area from the group of people in the foreground- there is a corresponding patch to the verso of the canvas and some overpainting to the area. There is a repair above-right to the boat in the backgroun with a corresponding patch to the verso of the canvas. There is a further small repair to the paint surface to the upper left in the skyline. There is yellowing of the varnish and surface dirt as well as some minor surface accretions. A scratch is present to the centre-right edge with some paint loss, a small chip is present in the paint above-left of the boat in the background and some wear to the paint surface on the right side by the cliff. Some retouching is present. Old labels are attached to the verso with faded inscriptions.
