BALFOUR, Lady Eve (1898-1990)

BALFOUR, Lady Eve (1898-1990) Founder of the Soil Association and pioneer organic farmer. An archive of circa 80 letters written to Lady Eve Balfour, mainly 1954 - 57, on a variety of subjects, from correspondents in Africa, Europe and North America, some with envelopes and stamps.

Eve Balfour purchased a farm at Haughley, near Stowmarket, Suffolk, and in 1943 wrote her influential best seller 'The Living Soil'. In 1945 she founded The Soil Associated and devoted the rest of her life to it, travelling the world to lecture and spread the message that if we poison the soil we poison ourselves (quantity)
