Letter from General (John) Lord Cutts 1661-1707

CUTTS, John, Baron (1660/61-1707)
COMMANDER UNDER MARLBOROUGH 1702-04, Army Officer and Politician
Autograph letter signed, 20th February 1702 - March 3rd 1703. Written to a Mr Watkins, the letter reads: 'Sr, I have received yours of the first of March and hope those Gentlemen who design to speak to me show mercy; will consider whether 'tis mercy to the Troops not to stop crying such Disorders.

I see my Lord Chief Justice is of opinion that women can't be tried: I wish you had acquainted me before you had wrote, Because I would have wrote to him at the same time. But pray take no notice of his Opinion to anyone 'till I see you. I have opened no letter but such as I imagine you would have me open. There were two enclosed, One for Monsieur Slengerloud, and one for the Pensionary of Amersdam both of which have been taken care of. I suppose you have heard, the Queen has done me the Honour to make me Lieutenant General of her Armys. I mention it, because I believe you enough of my friend not to be envy at it. I am sincerely Sir Your faithful humble servant, Cutts.'

Commander in Chief in the Low Countries for Marlborough's Campaign. Hero of Boyne, Namur, Venloo etc. Cutts notably commanded 11,000 men at Blenhem and forced the surrender of the village.
