Rare Caughley 'Frederick Duke of York' chocolate cup

A rare Caughley chocolate cup
circa 1790
with flute-moulding to the lobed rim and a pronounced double scroll handle, decorated by the Chamberlain workshop with the crowned Royal Garter and motto 'Honi soit qui mal y pense', a border of gilt lozenges infilled with blue around the rim, swags of gilt husks tied with ribbons below,
unmarked, 8cm high, 10cm diameter

The Chamberlain archives refer to a number of orders from Prince Frederick, Duke of York, the second son of King George III. This set was probably made to celebrate his forthcoming betrothal to Princess Frederica of Prussia.

Condition Report
The cup has had numerous museum-style repairs. It has previously been in three sections and has had old stapled repairs removed. There is a 1.5cm wide chip to the upper rim which has been in-filled. Please see additional images.
