A Staffordshire figure of Heenan and Sayers, 19th century

depicting the American boxer John Heenan and the British Champion Tom Sayers, on a titled base, 25cm high

After an exceptionally bloody match that lasted 37 rounds and 2 hours 20 minutes, the boxing fight was brought to an untimely close when Heenan gained the advantage by forcing Sayers onto the ropes. Spectators rushed to cut the ropes in order to prevent Sawyers from being throttled by his opponent, leading to a ring invasion which caused the referee to flee and ultimately end the match in a draw.

Condition Report

Crazing throughout, wear to gilded title. Chip to top left corner of fence, very small nibbles to the foot rim on the reverse of the figure. Some minor losses to bocage on base. Small graze to elbow of Sayers, a firing crack to his neck and also a chip to his thumb.
