Lot 21

A Caughley tea bowl, circa 1780, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the Travellers pattern, below a double blue line border, S mark, 8cm diameter See C&WP, page 187 for a dessert plate in this same pattern, which the author describes as 'rare'. See also Holloway Chris, and Marno, Felicity 'Paul Sandby and Related Influences on Caughley Porcelain', p. 37 for a discussion of the travellers print. It is suggested that the rarity of the Travellers print probably reflects a lack of popularity at the time, thus we can assume that these wares were only produced for a short period.
