A Japanese Black Lacquer Portable Zushi Shrine

A Japanese black lacquer and parcel gilt zushi shrine containing a giltwood figure of the Juichimen Kannon

Edo Period

The finely carved figure seated beneath a flower painted canopy and on a lotus throne above a rocky base set on a three-tier pedestal with elaborate gilt kohai (nimbus) behind, wearing flowing robes and with four principle arms to the front and nine further arms to the sides holding a variety of objects, the interior and doors gilt, the exterior mounted with metal hinges, hasp plate and decorative fittings engraved with foliage.

Condition Report
The outer case shows significant losses to lacquer all around with some evidence of retouching in places.  Inside there is some rubbing to the gilt on the doors with retouching to half of one of them.  Minor rubbing to the canopy.  Evidence of small repair to tip of corona.  Some rubbing to gilt on figure.  Loss to openwork section of throne beneath lotus petals.  Some flaking and a little retouching to the lotus petals.  Evidence of figure being reglued to base.  Flaking to rocks.  Significant flaking to stand especially at the back.  Rubbing to base section.
