The Autumn Auction

  Lot 188

A Caughley 'Prince of Wales' plate

A rare Caughley trial plate
circa 1785-90
of lobed form, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the Prince of Wales feathers, gilded with four distinct outer borders, painted S mark,
20.5cm diameter

Provenance: Ex. Willis Collection.

Notes: Items from the 'Prince of Wales' service usually appear decorated in polychrome rather than underglaze blue. It is therefore possible that this plate is a trial piece, although a bowl and cover with a similar type of decoration is held by the Shrewsbury Museum Services.

Sold for £800
