Joseph Farquharson was a landscape painter and is famous for his winter, snow-clad scenes, often enlivened with flocks of sheep. He did a number of works depicting gardens. He was born in Edinburgh, studying under Peter Graham, RA and subsequently at the Board of Manufacture School and RSA, where he exhibited in 1859. He exhibited at the RA from 1873, being elected an ARA in 1900. He studied under Carolus Duran in 1880. In an essay Sickert wrote he expressed that he preferred Farquharson's work to that of Courbet.

Bonhams sold a similar size example for £4,000 on the 14th of October 2020. Lyon and Turnbull sold a larger garden view, bearing a striking resemblance to the one depicted here, on the 4th of December 2020 for £5,500.

Condition Report

The painting is an oil on canvas, framed under glazing, not examined external to the frame. The canvas appears in good condition with no obvious evidence for any holes or tears and the tension is good. The paint surface appears stable and in good condition with no obvious signs of deterioration or losses. The frame has some general wear and tear including one chip to the gesso in the top right corner and a loose surface piece lower left, minor chips and wear to corners, joints are solid.
