  Lot 15

A very rare Caughley dessert tureen, cover and stand painted with the Flowery Cartouche pattern, circa 1785-92, unmarked, tureen 14.5cm wide, stand 23.2cm wide Provenance: Wright Collection no. 406 purchased from Charnwood. Literature: See Ironbridge 1999 nos. 380 or 381 and The Caughley Society, Caughley Blue and White Patterns, p.157 where the stand is illustrated. Furthermore Geoffrey Godden wrote an article in the ECC journal on a pair of these tureens, of which this is one. Godden goes on to say, 'Two tureens with their stands are the only pieces known with this pattern, their attribution as Caughley being based on their shape. This suggests that there may have been a dessert service dating from the latter part of the 1780s, which, if the tureens are anything to go by, would have been of excellent quality'.
