Footnote:Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown RA was born in Nottingham in 1866, studying at the Nottingham School of Art and Bushey School of Art. He was a successful impressionist painter, known to be one of the leading landscape artists of the 20th Century. He received a knighthood in 1938 and continued to paint professionally until blindness forced him to retire shortly before his death.
