FOWLES, John. The Magus. A revised version. Jonathan Cape 1st edition 1977. Inscribed on the half title: 'Denys & Monica. Gratefully and affectionately, John. Lyme June 2nd 1977'. In a very good dustwrapper,
With Behind the Magus, Colophon Press, 1st edition 1994. Blue card covers. From an edition of 232 copies, this copy not numbered. Inscribed on the title page: 'To the old friend at page 11; and you could have done it so much better! John Fowles 1994'. There is a further inscription on the dedication page. Under 'For Circe and all the other tomb-robbers' Fowles has written 'alias academics, but I suppose they would claim to have engendered anatomy. The Circe here is real - I first fell for her name, but when I met her in Germany, where she was doing a PhD...let's say, if I had been thirty years younger. Beautiful, clever, entrancing, there's a nice German word betsirtsen, to encircefy; I was encircefied. If I ever go back to Spetsai, I hope it will be with her.'
Both books are inscribed to Denys Sharrocks, Fowles' closest friend.
