stamped 'SECRET' in red and numbered '127' in red pencil, this 4-page document issued from Headquarters Fighter Command (Equipment Branch) to Intelligence provides a comprehensive list of all aircraft in each squadron and its strength alongside the state of each plane. The list includes Battle of Britain planes such as Spitfires, Hurricanes, Blenheims, Lysanders, Hectors and others. Each aircraft is listed as either in service; in service within 12 hours; in-service within days; repairable but not in service within 7 days, or beyond a unit's capacity. This document demonstrates the perilous state of play as of February 1940, with just 216 Spitfires and 206 Hurricanes in a condition fit for immediate take-off.
