SHACKLETON, Ernest (1874-1922), Antarctic explorer, typed letter signed, 4to, on Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition embossed notepaper, dated 5th June 1917. To Lord Burnham at the Daily Telegraph office, thanking him for the leader article in that newspaper about his recent expedition. 'It was a most generously conceived and expressed verdict on our expedition'. Small remnant of album page to verso. The letter refers to Shackleton's 1914-17 expedition to the Antarctic. The expedition was a complete disaster. The ship, the Endurance, got stuck in the ice and drifted for 9 months before being crushed and then sinking. Survival became the only priority. Shackleton's heroic leadership against almost impossible odds meant he saved the lives of all his men.
