Edwin Markham (1833-1918) British Lieutenant-General who served in the Crimean War and was present at the Battle of Alma, the Battle of Inkerman and the Siege of Sevastopol.

Lengthy Autograph Letter Signed, eight pages, 8vo, The Camp, Varna, 26th June n.y. (1854), to Mr. Lascelles. An informative letter describing his passage to Bosphorus, close to Scutari, providing details of his military activities (field days, marches, a review for the Sultan etc.), referring to a row with Turkish soldiers (‘swords were drawn & there was one Turk killed on the spot, a sailor had his head cut open & died’) and his experiences of Bazardjik (‘The Russians have been there, or rather the Cossacks, & part of the town is destroyed by fire & the remainder in ruins, not a soul in the place’) as well as the Turkish Infantry (‘The Turks though of a most slovenly appearance when not on parade, are quite astonishing with the precision with which they go through their various exercises’) and also mentioning Lord Cardigan (‘The cavalry under Lord Cardigan are in advance at the village of Devna…..Yesterday authentic news came from Omar Pasha to say that the Russians have abandoned the siege of Silistria & the Turks made a sortie & destroyed all their entrenchments. Lord Cardigan has been sent forward to patrol 50 miles from Devna & reconnoitre any new position the enemy may take up’)
