Summer Fine Art Auction

  Lot 1

A Caughley Waiting Chinaman sparrowbeak jug

A Caughley sparrowbeak milk jug, circa 1780, of baluster form with strap handle and painted in underglaze blue with the Waiting Chinaman pattern with simple loop and line internal border, blue painted S mark, 9cm high

Footnote:
See Caughley Bicentenary Exhibition catalogue no. 438 for a similar example in the same pattern. Like a number of other Caughley patterns, an identical version of this design was used at the Worcester porcelain factory until 1775, the year it began at Caughley. This offers up the interesting prospect that the painter responsible left Worcester for some reason and moved on to complete work at Caughley.

Sold for £220
