A Minton parian model of Clorinda by John Bell, circa 1848, modelled seated holding a shield with sword sheath and helmet beside, impressed marks, 33.5cm high Originally made for Summerly's Art Manufactures, it was designed as the companion figure to Dorothea, and exhibited by Minton at the Great Exhibition in 1851 The original statue was exhibited at the 1848 R.A. Clorinda is the beautiful pagan warrior featured in Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata (1580). Clorinda, in the battle between the pagan and Christian armies, is mortally wounded by her lover Tancred, a Christian nobleman who fails to recognize her in her armour.
