Canadian Memorial Cross awarded to Sgt. J Layland

A Canadian Memorial Cross, G.V.R. Awarded to 8283 Sgt. J. Layland.

Sergeant John Layland was born in Leicestershire on 5th November 1882 and served with the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. A bookkeeper in civilian life, Layland enlisted on the 22nd of September 1914. He was killed in action at 4 am on 30th September 1915 in the trenches Ploegstreet (aka 'Plug Street), when he was visiting a listening post and sadly took a bullet wound to the head. He was buried and interred at an enclosure near Mud Lanes. Records further show a gunshot wound had previously injured him to the shoulder in May 1915. Relevant personnel documents are uploaded online and copies can be supplied with the lot on request.
