Spring Fine Art Auction

  Lot 6

A H. Ricketts & Co sealed wine bottle

A H. Ricketts & Co. Glass Works, Devon sealed cylindrical wine bottle
the seal with initials 'D.B.D' and the date 1836,
27.5cm high

Provenance: The bottles can be attributed to Daniel Bishop Davy, shipbuilder of Topsham, Devonshire. He worked with his brother Francis in a number of successful business enterprises, most of which involved heavy industry. It is unclear why Davy placed so many orders for sealed bottles each year, as well as unsealed examples, as there is no information as to whether he was also in the wine merchant trade, although this would not be surprising.

Sold for £160
