Poto-Poto school, a collection of six figure paintings, Congo, North West Africa, typically depicting stylised figures in various poses, signed, 30cm x 23cm (x5) and 49cm x 15cm (x1). (6)
Footnote:Footnote: Founded by Pierre Lods in Brazzaville circa 1951, Poto-Poto was always an informal school. Would-be artists were given paints and canvasses and encouraged to express themselves freely. During the 1950s, several exhibitions were held in Africa and overseas. When Lods departed for Senegal in 1960, Nicholas Ondongo, a former student, became director. The style is characterised by so called 'Mickeys', cartoon-like figures, often depicted in dynamic surrealist poses.
