Antiques and Interiors Auction

Lot 485

A reproduction Benjamin Franklin wall clock by Thwaites & Reed

A reproduction Benjamin Franklin wall clock by Thwaites & Reed, the 5.5" lacquered brass arched dial with silvered chapter of four-hour configuration with a single hand, a subsidiary seconds dial in the arch, the four-pillar weight driven movement with anchor escapement, set on a mahogany bracket, number 921 from a limited edition of 1000, with certificate, booklet and instructions, 40cm high.

Footnote:

Benjamin Franklin's (1706-1790) design of 1757 for a wall timepiece was never realised or manufactured in his lifetime. But from his detailed notes about configuration as well as manufacturing methods and techniques, the maker of the present lot, Thwaites & Reed of London, had everything needed to produce a working example, exactly as it would have been made in the 18th century. The accompanying literature indicates the date of manufacture as 1976 and the edition number 921 of 1000.

Sold for £340
