Philip Sutton is a British artist best known for his bold and energetic use of colour. He graduated from the Slade School of art having studied under William Coldstream, was part of the London Group of Painters and later elected to the Royal Academy. He has had a varied and wide-reaching career, his most successful period of work hailing from the 1960s and 1970s. During this period of time he made a series of portraits of his eldest son Jacob.

Condition Report
The painting is an unframed oil on canvas, the canvas being of good tension without any visible holes, tears or rips, there is some minor warping at the stretcher joints in the top right and bottom left corners. The paint surface appears to be stable and of good condition, with some minor surface accretions. There are some abrasions present predominantly concentrated around the edges, in particular the top and the lower left corner which have resulted in some surface paint loss, there is a chip to the paint in the hat.
